Peace in Troubled Times
Isn’t it funny how we look outside ourselves to feel better?
We all do it.
Maybe we think it’s easier.
External circumstances may provide a brief panacea, but it doesn’t seem to last. We might have a moment of happiness when we buy something we’ve wanted. I felt a spark of joy when I ordered a new set of painting brushes last week. But after a few minutes, it faded and I was back living in troubled times again. Heaven knows a lot of us shop to feel better, so if I just called you out, you’re in good company.
I also felt a moment of peace when I sipped a beautiful cup of coffee this morning, but as I drained my cup, so that moment passed.
On the other hand, when I take a few minutes to go within, seeking that little sanctuary of peace that exists deep inside me, I touch a source of lasting harmony and the kind of quiet joy that doesn’t slip away. It burns like a candle flame. Steady. True. Warming my heart, my mind and my spirit.
Whenever we look outside ourselves to feel better, it’s a temporary fix that pulls us away from looking within. One thing I’ve learned from my sanctuary practice is that peace is an inside job.
My external, physical sanctuary space serves as a reminder to look for peace where I can truly find it.
How do you find peace in troubled times? Tell me in the comments below. I would so love to hear.
With love and gratitude,
Lisa
