Creating Sanctuary for All
The concept of sanctuary first came to me during a particularly challenging time in my life (read more here)—a season when the weight of the world seemed unbearably heavy, and the solutions to my struggles felt out of reach. It was during this time, amidst the chaos, that I began to understand the profound connection between our surroundings and our inner sense of peace and wellbeing.
One of the challenges I faced then was navigating how to best care for my daughter with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Chloe is a bright, charming young woman who has overcome countless challenges in her life. But at that time, I was grappling with how to keep her safe while having seizures, alongside navigating the stormy weather of her mood disorder while also not losing my own sense of balance. I didn’t know anyone else dealing with anything like what was happening in my family, and so I felt very alone. It was a difficult time. As a mother, it was heartbreaking to feel as though the resources and solutions available weren’t enough for the person I love so deeply.
Around that time, I was introduced to the STARability Foundation, a remarkable, Naples-based organization that provides resources, education and community for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Joining this community was life-changing for Chloe and really for our entire family. STARability didn’t just offer programs and connections; it gave me something far greater—perspective. It helped me understand that caring for individuals with specialized needs requires creativity and innovation. It challenged me to reimagine how I could support Chloe, not only as her mother but as an interior designer.
I vividly remember the moment when the idea of sanctuary took root in my heart and in my work. During an early morning walk through my neighborhood, it became clear to me that the spaces we inhabit hold immense power and influence in our lives. I realized that I could use my skills as a designer to create a space for Chloe that was tailored to her needs: soft colors to soothe her, natural lighting to create a warm and welcoming glow, plush rugs and pillows to bring her comfort. It wasn’t just about making a beautiful space—it was about crafting an environment that could keep her safe, one that could cradle her body, ease her mind, and surround her with love and peacefulness. This environment could nurture her. This realization has transformed not only my approach to design and my design philosophy, but also my life philosophy as well.
My journey of discovery began years ago, but every time I engage with STARability, I’m reminded of those early days and how my philosophy of sanctuary first came to life- it’s one of the reasons my collaboration with STARability for their upcoming building and campus renovation project is so meaningful to me. Did I say upcoming project? Why yes, I did. And what kind of project, you might ask?
This project, which is part of a current and ongoing capital campaign, will provide, in three phases:
1. Programming space for daily, weekly and monthly events, classes and training and office space for the dedicated team that provides care and support for the participants
2. Community event center for gatherings, monthly socials and other public happenings
3. Residential housing to support independent living spaces on the campus
Isn’t this amazing?!
I am donating my design services to the effort, and am so excited to be a part of it. The spaces I design for STARability won’t just be offices, classrooms, event spaces, and living quarters—they’ll be sanctuaries intentionally designed to support the unique needs of the STAR participants and address their wellbeing on every level: physical, emotional and mental. And as we are addressing the inner experience of peace and harmony and balance, I’ll add spiritual to that list as well.
The opportunity to create environments that foster peace, comfort, and inclusion for those who need it most feels like the highest privilege I could earn. This work is deeply rewarding—not just because it fills my cup but because it allows me to give back to a community that has given me (and my entire family) so much. It’s a true honor to be part of STARability’s next chapter, and I can’t wait to help this beautiful, powerful and impactful vision come to life.
And I’ll be honest – to imagine Chloe, living (somewhat) independently, surrounded by a community that knows and loves her, engaged in meaningful work and activities on a daily basis, fills my heart with a soaring joy (and sweet relief) that is hard to capture in writing. As a parent it’s a constant concern, thinking of what her future will be like when her father and I are gone. I am so grateful to be involved in something that will help to provide for her and ensure that she is safe and happy. Taking that a step further, knowing that I can help other families in a similar position as well is just so good. This, I can do.
Philanthropy has always given my work greater meaning, and this project is no exception. It’s a chance to create something that uplifts, inspires, and transforms lives in a way that aligns perfectly with the philosophy of sanctuary. I’ll be sharing more about this journey as it unfolds, and I look forward to bringing you along every step of the way. It will be an enlivening way to see sanctuary at work in the world.
